There's something satisfying about running a lever gun, and the Henry Long Ranger H014S-223 lets you do it with a cartridge that's cheap to feed and easy on the shoulder. This is not a traditional tube-fed carbine, though. Henry built the Long Ranger around a geared action that drives a chromed steel bolt with a six-lug rotary head into an extension at the rear of the barrel. That gives you the kind of consistent, rigid lockup you'd expect from a bolt action, which is exactly why this rifle can handle a modern pointed-bullet cartridge like the .223 and shoot it well.

The 20-inch round blued barrel is free floated and rifled with a 1:9 twist, a versatile rate that stabilizes the most common .223 bullet weights for coyotes, prairie dogs, and range work. Feeding comes from a flush-fitting 5-round detachable box magazine, so reloads are quick and pointed soft points are no problem. This is the sighted version of the rifle, wearing a ramp front sight with an ivory bead and a fully adjustable folding rear, and the lightweight alloy receiver is drilled and tapped if you'd rather run glass. Fold the rear sight down and you've got a clean sight line for a scope.

The straight-grip American walnut stock has cut checkering at the wrist and forearm, capped off with a solid rubber recoil pad, and sling swivel studs come installed for the walk in. At 40.5 inches overall and right around 7 pounds, it carries nicely and comes to the shoulder fast. A transfer bar safety keeps things simple without adding a crossbolt to the classic lines, and the exposed hammer and forged steel lever keep the feel familiar for anyone who grew up on lever guns.
